The Ruy Lopez (Spanish Game): 3.Bb5. The bishop pressures the c6 knight that defends e5. It has been a favourite of world champions for centuries.
Black questioned the bishop with 3...a6. White's main reply is to retreat the bishop to a4.
A typical Closed Ruy Lopez position: White builds the centre with h3 and d4, Black gains space on the queenside. It is a long, strategic battle.
