How to recognise Smothered Mate

  • The king is usually in the corner, surrounded by its own pieces.
  • A knight check cannot be blocked.
  • It is often preceded by a queen sacrifice (see Philidor's legacy).

How to defend

  • Don't fill every square around a cornered king; leave at least one escape.
  • Trade or control knights that can reach f7 (f2) early.

Frequently asked questions

Which piece delivers a smothered mate?

Only a knight: its check can't be blocked, so it can mate a surrounded king on its own.

Are 'boğmaca' and smothered mate the same?
