Moves

1.Rd8#

Black's king is on g8 and the f7, g7 and h7 pawns block every escape. 1.Rd8 gives check; the king can't step forward and the eighth rank is controlled by the rook: mate.

How to recognise Back-Rank Mate

  • The three pawns in front of the castled king have not moved.
  • No rook or queen guards the back rank.
  • A rook or queen reaches the last rank via an open file.

How to defend

  • At a quiet moment play h3 (h6 for Black) or g3 to give your king 'luft' (an escape square).
  • Keep at least one rook guarding your back rank.

Frequently asked questions

Is the corridor mate the same as back-rank mate?

Yes, both names describe the same pattern: the king on the back rank can't escape because of its own pawns.

How do you prevent a back-rank mate?

Give your king an escape square (h3/h6) or keep a rook on the back rank.
