How to recognise Ladder Mate (Two Rooks)
- One rook cuts a rank while the other checks on the next one.
- The rooks leapfrog; the king retreats one rank at a time.
- If the king approaches a rook, move that rook to the far side.
How to defend
- Against two heavy pieces keep your king central and close to the rooks.
- Watch for stalemate: if the rooks cover every square without check it's a draw.

- Back-Rank Mate — In a back-rank mate the king is trapped behind its own pawns and a rook or queen mates on the last rank.
- Rook and King Mate — In the rook and king mate the rook boxes in the enemy king and, when the kings stand face to face, checks along the edge for mate.
- Queen and King Mate — Queen and king versus king is the first endgame technique every player must know: the queen drives the king to the edge, your king approaches and the queen mates on the last rank.
