History

It was common in master games in the early 20th century before more ambitious openings took over. Today it is back as a solid, low-theory option.

White's plan

  • 4.Bb5 brings Ruy Lopez ideas, 4.d4 brings Scotch ideas.
  • Solid development, castling and a gradual central expansion with d3-d4.

Black's plan

  • Keeping the symmetry (...Bb4) is reliable.
  • With the Rubinstein Variation 4...Nd4 Black takes the initiative.
